5 lessons you can learn from surfing

Posted by RH on

As cliché as it sounds, surfing isn’t just a sport, it’s a lifestyle. If you’re a passionate surfer, it infiltrates every aspect of your life and is always at the forefront of your mind, no matter what you’re doing.

The team at The Surfboard Warehouse live and breathe surfing and we believe that you can learn some valuable life lessons from this amazing sport.

Waiting is a big part of surfing. Waiting for the surf to pick up. Sitting on your surfboard waiting for the waves to come through. Waiting for your turn in the lineup. And so on. If you don't learn patience from surfing, you won’t learn it anywhere.

To appreciate nature

Whenever you surf you’re surrounded by the natural beauty of nature. It’s a beautiful thing to ride a wave and feel the power of nature beneath you. If you’ve ever surfed alongside dolphins or other marine life, you’ll agree that it’s definitely a special privilege. Most surfers feel some kind of connection to the ocean, after all, without it we wouldn’t have a sport!

To cherish alone time

Let’s face it, life is hectic these days. Between work and family, it’s hard to find quiet time to ourselves. That’s the great thing about surfing, it's a great escape from the everyday grind. Sitting in the ocean waiting for the next set to come through, not thinking about anything else but your next wave. Surfing, or paddling on your stand up paddleboard is very peaceful, especially if you time it right and have the place to yourself.

The importance of fitness

Surfing really makes you appreciate your fitness. If you haven’t surfed for a while, you’ll feel it throughout your whole body. Core strength is so important for surfing and just like any sport, the fitter you are, the better you’ll perform.

The simplicity of happiness

One of surfing’s biggest draw-cards is its simplicity. Break surfing down, take away everything else and it’s quite simple. You, the waves and your surfboard. It’s often the simple things in life that bring us the most joy.
