How to take care of your SUP
A stand up paddleboard is not something you buy every day. It’s an investment and just like anything, if you want it to last you need to look after it. When you buy a SUP from The Surfboard Warehouse you’re buying a quality board, a board that will stand the test of time and be around for years to come. However, no matter how durable and strong your board is, if you don’t look after it, your board will end up damaged and ageing prematurely, meaning you’ll be ready to buy a new SUP sooner than you think.
Here are 6 simple tips to help you take care for your SUP.
Keep your board out of direct heat
This is probably one of the most important things you can do to take care of your stand up paddleboard. Stand up paddleboards are not designed to be left out in high temperatures for prolonged periods of time. You risk de-lamination, which is when the fibreglass bubbles up and separates from the rest of the board. It resembles a blister.
You should always store your board out of direct sunlight. If you’re travelling, we recommend you buy a SUP cover, both to prevent stone chips while driving.
We also recommend you stay clear of dark coloured boards. They attract the heat and subject your board to even higher temperatures.
Wear a legrope in the surf
If you’re taking your stand up paddleboard in the surf, do your board a favour and wear a legrope. This is particularly important when you’re surfing near rocks or in big crowds where there could be a collision.
Repair damage ASAP
As soon as board is damaged, fix it. The last thing you want to do is take your board out when it is damaged, which allows water to seep into the core of your board and cause problems. There are plenty of reputable surfboard repairers around that will fix your SUP for a reasonable price.
Use a SUP paddle guard
A paddle guard will protect both the rails and the paddle from bumps and knocks without affecting the performance of your SUP paddle.
Invest in rail tape
Rail tape is great for protecting your rails from chips and scratches and we believe it’s an essential purchase with every new SUP. Rail tape is waterproof, durable and easy to apply.
Rinse and dry your board after use
After you use your SUP it will only take 2 minutes to give it a quick rinse and dry. If you’re in saltwater it’s super important to wash all the salt off to keep your board looking great.
Don’t ever put your board inside your cover when it’s wet. If you leave a wet board in a bag for a long period of time you risk ozmosis. If you haven’t heard of ozmosis, this is when the water gets absorbed back into the board’s finish and causes the paint to bubble.
