The massive air that landed Medina a perfect 10!
Even if you're not the biggest fan of Gabriel Medina, it was hard not to be hooting for him in the Quiksilver Pro in France last night. Medina had his work cut out for him, surfing against Australian rippers Matt Wilkinson and Owen Wright, but on his second wave he pulled off a manoeuvre that earned him a round of applause from both his fellow competitor and the judges.
The world champ launched into a huge full rotation backside air, scoring him a perfect 10. On all accounts this air was perfection. The height and the speed he managed to generate on his surfboard was out of this world.
Take a look for yourself.
This score, combined with another high score of 9.83, gave Medina the heat on a silver platter. In an interview afterwards, Medina admitted that it was probably one of the best airs he’s ever landed.
While Wilkinson didn’t make it through his next heat in round 5, Owen Wright made it through to the quarterfinals where he meets another Brazilian surfer, Adriano de Souza. Medina will be coming face-to-face with John John Florence. Fellow Australian surfers Mick Fanning, Julian Wilson and Bede Durbidge are also through to the quarterfinals.
