Bringing science to the Surf Industry
Luca Oggiano is a research scientist at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) and Institutt for Energiteknikk (IFE). Through his work he is able to assist the S*Lab Research and Development sector to help improve, hone and develop board design. Luca has always had a passion for surfing and science and has a PhD and master degree in Aerospace Engineering.
His career has focused heavily in sport technology and has worked extensively with wind energy, aerodynamics and hydrodynamics in order to improve and enhance product design. He has carried out design projects for Cycling (TeamSky, Castelli, KASK, Cycling Australia, Tour De France), Running (Adidas and Puma), Speed Skating (Spinno), Skiing and Ski Jumping (Norwegian Olympic Team) and Surfing (The Surfboard Warehouse).
Through the use of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), Luca is able to calculate and quantify the performance statistics of our surfboard and stand up paddleboard models and give an insight into future development and enhancement through the use of computer generated testing. Luca can calculate the lift, drag, speed and bouyancy of a product to aid in board design and development.
When Luca isn't in the laboratory you will find him surfing his Tajen at his local icy cold beach break!
