The Surfboard Warehouse Fin Guide

The Surfboard Warehouse Fin Guide

Whether you’re setting up your first softboard or fine-tuning your performance shortboard, understanding fins is the key to unlocking your board’s full potential.
At The Surfboard Warehouse, we’ve tested every fin setup across every wave type and board style. This guide explains what fins do, how to choose the right setup, and how small changes can completely transform your ride.

1. Why Fins Matter

Fins are your board’s steering and control system. They influence how your board accelerates, turns, and holds through the face of a wave.
A great board with the wrong fins can feel sluggish or unstable. The right fins make it come alive.

Fins act as:

  • An engine – creating thrust and speed through turns

  • An anchor – providing grip and hold when carving or bottom turning

  • A rudder – steering your board and controlling direction

2. Fin Design Basics

Each fin is defined by three main elements: base, height, and rake.

Fin Feature

What It Does

Best For

Base (width)

The length of the fin along the board. A wider base generates more drive and speed.

Long, drawn-out turns

Height (depth)

How far the fin extends into the water. More height gives extra hold and control.

Steep, powerful waves

Rake (sweep)

The backward curve of the fin. More rake means smoother, longer turns. Upright fins pivot quickly.

Raked: long turns / Upright: snappy manoeuvres

3. Fin Flex and Materials

Material

Flex Level

Feel

Best For

Soft Flex (plastic/composite)

High

Smooth and forgiving

Beginners or softboards

Performance Core / Fibreglass

Medium

Balanced control and drive

Intermediate surfers

Carbon or Stealth Construction

Low

Fast response and high power

Advanced surfers

Stiffer fins deliver instant response and hold in powerful waves. More flexible fins offer a smoother feel and are better for relaxed surfing in smaller conditions.

4. Fin Systems: FCS, Futures, and AQSS

Different boards use different fin box systems. The most common are:

  • FCS1 Twin Tab – Classic plug system, reliable and widely used.

  • FCS2 – Tool-less system that lets you snap fins in and out easily.

  • Futures – Single-tab design with a solid connection for added drive.

6. Fin Size Guide

Fin size relates to surfer weight and board volume.

Surfer Weight

Fin Size

Under 55 kg

Small

55–70 kg

Medium

70–85 kg

Large

Over 85 kg

Extra Large

Use this as a starting point, then adjust based on your wave type and how much hold or looseness you prefer.

8. How to Choose the Right Setup

  1. Check your fin box system. Identify if your board takes FCS1, FCS2, Futures, or AQSS.

  2. Match your fin setup to wave type. Twin for small waves, thruster for all-round, quad or 2+1 for bigger surf.

  3. Select your size. Choose based on your weight and board volume.

  4. Refine your feel. Softer fins for smoothness, stiffer fins for power and control.

9. Expert Tips from Our Team

  • Change one element at a time so you can feel the difference.

  • Keep a spare fin set for different surf conditions.

  • Store fins in a protective case to prevent chips and cracks.

  • Rinse fins after each surf to avoid salt build-up and corrosion.
